the changing seasons

fall to winter…

bare branches prepare for the coming of old man winter…a brisk walk in the cool moist air reveals the glorious scent of pine and a neighbors wood burning fire…favorite wool sweaters and throws take center stage once again…and like old friends, they offer familiar warmth and comfort during this festive time of year…

the wild swans at coole

The Wild Swans at Coole by William Butler Yeats

The trees are in their autumn beauty,
The woodland paths are dry,
Under the October twilight the water
Mirrors a still sky;
Upon the brimming water among the stones
Are nine-and-fifty Swans.
The nineteenth autumn has come upon me
Since I first made my count;
I saw, before I had well finished,
All suddenly mount
And scatter wheeling in great broken rings
Upon their clamorous wings.
I have looked upon those brilliant creatures,
And now my heart is sore.
All’s changed since I, hearing at twilight,
The first time on this shore,
The bell-beat of their wings above my head,
Trod with a lighter tread.
Unwearied still, lover by lover,
They paddle in the cold
Companionable streams or climb the air;
Their hearts have not grown old;
Passion or conquest, wander where they will,
Attend upon them still.
But now they drift on the still water,
Mysterious, beautiful;
Among what rushes will they build,
By what lake’s edge or pool
Delight men’s eyes when I awake some day
To find they have flown away?

creepy crawler

I spotted this jurassic park size spider outside my window this morning…thankfully she is far more interested in weaving her web and feasting on bugs than she is in me! All I need now is a black cat and a broomstick to complete my halloween decor!

small hands

this afternoon, amid all the vibrant autumnal color, the heart of this purple cabbage stole the show…her luminous hot pink core, a sibling to the red beet perhaps, opened my eyes to a more feminine fall palette…and her delicate ruffles, like small hands, appear to be reaching out for the warmth of the sun…

autumn’s wand

Wishing you a blissful autumn weekend! Take time to enjoy the beauty and bounty of the season!

“By the sixth of October the leaves generally begin to fall, in successive showers, after frost or rain; but the principal leaf-harvest, the acme of the Fall, is commonly about the sixteenth. Some morning at that date there is perhaps a harder frost than we have seen, and ice formed under the pump, and now, when the morning wind rises, the leaves come down in denser showers than ever. They suddenly form thick beds or carpets on the ground, in this gentle air, or even without wind, just the size and form of the tree above. Some trees, as small Hickories, appear to have dropped their leaves instantaneously, as a soldier grounds arms at a signal; and those of the Hickory, being bright yellow still, though withered, reflect a blaze of light from the ground where they lie. Down they have come on all sides, at the first earnest touch of autumn’s wand, making a sound like rain.” ~ Henry David Thoreau, 1862

autumnal tints

Wishing you a happy weekend!

“How beautiful, when a whole tree is like one great scarlet fruit full of ripe juices, every leaf, from lowest limb to topmost spire, all aglow, especially if you look toward the sun! What more remarkable object can there be in the landscape? Visible for miles, too fair to be believed. If such a phenomenon occurred but once, it would be handed down by tradition to posterity, and get into the mythology at last.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

towering pines

Autumn in New England ~ nothing compares to a perfect fall day. It’s as if mother nature gives us her very best before winter takes hold. Inspired by the gorgeous weather this weekend, I decided to photograph one of my all time favorite landscapes. What I love most are the long shadows from the late afternoon sun. The light comes streaming through the towering pines at the crest of the hill.

It’s a magnificent sight to behold…
