I’m home from my first ever High Point Market ~ The World’s Home for Home Furnishings! With more than 1.1 million square meters of exhibit space, I wasn’t able to see everything but what I did experience was amazing! Helping me sort through the chaos was a guardian angel, my sister Karen…host, mentor, and mutual design lover, I can’t thank her enough for her kindness, support and love…we ended our first day together with a glass of champagne at the Baker showroom…a fairytale ending to a perfect day

So let’s begin our journey at Baker…Megan Hunter (from Baker’s Online Marketing department) led me on a grand tour of the showroom starting with a beautiful new collection by Thomas Pheasant…soft neutrals instantly soothed my senses…I was at ease and sublimely comfortable in my surroundings…the cohesive palette and artful details flowed effortlessly from room to room, while the designer’s own photography echoed his architectural inspirations…when I say that every detail was accounted for, I truly mean it…finishes, fabrics, styling, and lighting, all united to create an ethereal environment

I was fortunate enough to meet Thomas Pheasant at the tail end of my visit (thank you Megan!)…he was just as passionate and graceful in person as I imagined he would be…I asked him if he lives with his own pieces, and he quickly responded with an enthusiastic YES! He told me that what I was experiencing in the showroom represents how he lives…a true reflection of his aesthetic…how wonderful! Please enjoy this intimate look at Thomas Pheasant’s new collection celebrating his tenth anniversary at Baker

“Inspiration is not imitation. It’s not simply recreating something you have seen…it is taking something you have experienced and allowing it to filter through your own unique sensibility, so that when it comes out, it comes out new.”

Touch me by Stanley Kunitz

Summer is late, my heart.
Words plucked out of the air
some forty years ago
when I was wild with love
and torn almost in two
scatter like leaves this night
of whistling wind and rain.
It is my heart that’s late,
it is my song that’s flown.
Outdoors all afternoon
under a gunmetal sky
staking my garden down,
I kneeled to the crickets trilling
underfoot as if about
to burst from their crusty shells;
and like a child again
marveled to hear so clear
and brave a music pour
from such a small machine.
What makes the engine go?
Desire, desire, desire.
The longing for the dance
stirs in the buried life.
One season only,
………………….and it’s done.
So let the battered old willow
thrash against the windowpanes
and the house timbers creak.
Darling, do you remember
the man you married? Touch me,
remind me who I am.

While I’m away, I’ll be posting some personal tidbits inspired by Elle Decor’s monthly feature, 12 things he/she can’t live without…from fashion to travel, I thought this might be a fun departure from the norm…ok, let’s begin!

12 things I can’t live without

1) Anne Fontaine ~ For me, there is nothing like the feel and fit of an Anne Fontaine blouse or sweater..feminine, flirty, sophisticated and undeniably French, I’m instantly seduced by her designs…when in Boston, shop at the Boylston Street store (followed by tea at the Four Seasons!)

2) Provincetown, MA ~ Summer would not be complete without a trip to Provincetown…sunsets at Herring Cove, a glass of champagne on the porch of the Red Inn, a visit to the Packard Gallery, a morning stroll through the picturesque dunes…heaven!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend…live, love and enjoy!!!

I’m told there is a butterfly

Whose dance of life takes place on high;

So careless of its tiny power

It spends itself in love’s bright hour.

By frittering its strength away

It lives and dies all in one day.

Yet, though its wings soon cease their fanning,

It didn’t spend its whole day planning.

His favorite country pleasure is listening to the sound of raindrops on the metal roof…here, he can relax and read…be with his beloved dogs…decompress…

Located just 50 miles from the hustle and bustle of Washington DC, designer Darryl Carter discovered this charming country retreat…an 1840s stucco-and-clapboard farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills and horse farms of bucolic Fauquier County…gently restored to reveal its humble origins, the beautiful imperfections are what make this home sing…rough walls, creaky old doors, and an absence of fanciful moldings result in a textured and tactile environment…in fact, one section of wall in the master bath was purposefully left unfinished, the underlaying lath exposed as art…ceilings, walls and floors are painted in Benjamin Moore whites, a uniform backdrop for his treasured architectural salvage, English and Italian antiques, and rustic curiosities…

A farmhouse getaway as only Darryl Carter could envision…imperfection = perfection

You may be asking yourself, what is Patriot’s Day? It is a civic holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolution…observed in Massachusetts and Maine, the day begins with re-enactments of these first battles at the Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts and The Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts…re-enactors, dressed in authentic revolutionary war uniforms, recreate every detail of this historic day…may we remember those who gave their lives in the name of freedom…

“Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”
