anders zorn 1

Today’s post focuses on the humble yet sublime palette from In Wikström’s Studio painted by Anders Zorn in 1889. Layered earth tones of stone, clay and putty provide a subtle backdrop for his female subject’s luminous gold skin and vibrant red hair. To some, this palette may appear quite neutral, void of “color” if you will, but for me, this highly sophisticated canvas speaks to all that I love about color and texture. It has opened my eyes to an infinite number of artistic possibilities…

“I think even as a child there was a freedom here…and that freedom still exists…to be whoever you want to be…and you can show your wild side here…as I say, I grew up in Hyde Park, NY which was a little tiny farming community…and I maybe only spent six weeks a year here, as a child…but this was always my source…I couldn’t wait to come back…come back” ~ Anne Packard on Provincetown, from a short film titled, Anne Packard, An American Painter

I find myself watching this film over and over…to see inside her world…her view, her studio, her paints, her canvases…for me, this film is a treasure…one that will continue to inspire me and I hope will inspire you…

Back from a lovely trip to Provincetown! The weather was absolutely perfect! Warm sunshine was tempered by cool autumnal breezes off the water…the ocean was a magnificent dark green with white caps as far as the eye could see…galleries, shops and restaurants were open for business and bustling with activity…you could feel the happy energy in the air…the start of a new season filled with beauty, laughter and love…

I’m thrilled to share with you some photos from my visit to the Packard Gallery! The gallery is located in the historic East end of Provincetown and was once home to a Christian Science Church…it’s like entering another world when you step through the front doors…the high ceilings, tall arched windows, crisp white walls and warm wood floors allow the space to breathe and the art to sing…the experience is almost spiritual for me…peaceful and soothing, it always feeds my soul…please enjoy this intimate journey to one of my favorite places on earth…

I’m heading to Provincetown today and could not be more excited! Of course, one of my first stops will be to the Packard Gallery! In anticipation of my upcoming adventure, I thought I’d share with you a few of my favorite Anne Packard paintings from her current collection. Wishing you a wonderful weekend! See you Monday!

“My paintings have nothing to do with nature. It’s something to do with forever going… the space behind the sky… the space behind the shadow. It’s an inner world [of] emotion and yearning. I yearn to express solitude.” ~ Anne Packard

For this Sunday’s post, I chose a beloved catalog I had filed away from 2000…it was from a show at the Arden Gallery in Boston featuring oil paintings by the one and only Anne Packard…renowned for her paintings of Cape Cod and Provincetown, she captures the spirit and palette of the Cape like no one else…interestingly, this show featured a few Italian landscapes so I thought it would be a clever departure to highlight these unique pieces…for those of you who know and love her work, I hope the four images below are a pleasant surprise, and for those of you experiencing her work for the first time, I promise to write future posts filled with Anne’s paintings of the dunes, ocean, and ever changing light of Cape Cod…please enjoy this trip to Italy as seen through the eyes, hands and heart of Anne Packard
